The General is a steam locomotive built in December of 1855 in Paterson, New Jersey by Rodgers, Ketchum & Grosvenor Locomotive and Machine Works. The train provided transportation and freight service between Chattanooga and Atlanta on the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The train was hijacked on April 12, 1862 during the Civil War by Andrews’ Raiders at Big Shanty (now known as the city of Kennesaw) in what was later referred to as the Great Locomotive Chase. The story of the chase began when the 22 Northern spies, let by James J. Andrews, arrived in Marietta on April 10 and made their way to the Kennesaw stop in small groups in order to avoid arousing suspicion. When The General arrived on the morning of April 12, the Raiders waited for the passengers and crew to exit the train for breakfast and to restock fuel and water. ![]() When the train was empty, the Raiders siezed control of the locomotive and steamed north, hoping to burn bridges and disrupt communication and transportation lines. Before they were able to complete their mission, they ran out of water and wood two miles north of the city of Ringgold, Georgia (close to Chattanooga) and were forced to abandon the locomotive and flee. The raiders were eventually captured by the Confederate Army and some were executed as spies. Later, some of the surviving members of Andrews’ Raiders were the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. Narrowly escaping distruction itself during the burning of Atlanta, The General was in service for a number of years and then retired in Vinings, Georgia in 1891. In 1892, the General was refurbished and went on a tour that included the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta in 1895, and the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in Nashville in 1897 before being put on “permanent” display at the Union Depot in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 16, 1901. In 1961, the General was removed and refurbished for a 1962 tour to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Andrew’s Raid. After the tour, the General was returned to Chattanooga until it was given to the State of Georgia by the L. Railroad in 1967. After a legal battle for ownership of the historic locomotive, the General returned to Kennesaw in 1972. The General is currently housed in the in, Georgia and is listed on the National of Historic Places. CROWD AT BIG SHANTY (KENNESAW), GA., GREETS THE “GENERAL” Reconditioned by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad to run under its own power, the famous locomotive started on April 14, 1962 a series of Civil War Centennial tours. This first stop was made at the point where the “great locomotive chase” of April 12, 1862 began. Union raiders who stole the train and tried to wreck the W. Railroad were overtaken and forced to abandon the General about ninety miles away near Ringgold, Ga., ending one of the most dramatic events of the war. – Postcard published in 1962 “The General,” Captured by Andrews’ Raiders – Postcard sent from Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 2, 1905. Built in 1855 by Rodgers, Ketchum & Grosvenor, and star of the famous “Great Locomotive Chase” in the Civil War, the “General” eventually was saved and placed on display in the Chattanooga, Tennessee, Union Station in 1891. On June 6, 1961, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Co., which leases the Western & Atlantic from the state of Georgia, removed her so that she could be restored to run on the Centennial of the Chase. Buster Keaton plays Johnny Gray, a Southern railroad engineer who loves his train engine, The General, almost as much as he loves Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack). When the opening shots of the Civil War are fired at Fort Sumter, Johnny tries to enlist -- and he is deemed too useful as an engineer to be a soldier. All Johnny knows is that he's been rejected, and Annabelle, thinking him a coward, turns her back on him. When Northern spies steal the General (and, unwittingly, Annabelle), the story switches from drama and romance to adventure mixed with Keaton's trademark deadpan humor as he uses every means possible to catch up to the General, thwart the Yankees, and rescue his darling Annabelle -- for starters. As always, Keaton performs his own stunts, combining his prodigious dexterity, impeccable comic timing, and expressive body language to convey more emotion than the stars of any of the talkies that were soon to dominate cinema. ~ Emru Townsend, Rovi •. ½ A humorous, beautifully shot and constructed silent film concerning a railroad engineer (Buster Keaton) who wants badly to serve the Confederacy in the Civil War but is turned down. When his train and girl are both stolen from him by Union spies he is compelled to try to rescue both. While not as skilled in the realm of slapstick humor as the great Charlie Chaplin, Keaton proves himself to be a capable comedian. It is not as moving and memorable as 'City Lights' or some of Chaplin's silent films, but this is still a really well done movie that is consistently funny and entertaining, and it shows that it has a heart as well given its clever finale. ½ *Side note* If you've been reading my reviews recently, it is just by coincidence that the most recent films I've seen were from the silent era, or, in the case of The Grey, and the Gold Rush, about trying to survive in a frozen landscape. Also, like The Gold Rush, this is a film that's considered to be one of the best ever, silent or otherwise, and a top comedy as well. ANd personally, just like The Gold Rush, I'm going to sin again and say that this is overrated and that I wasn't totally in love with it, but still recognize it as being very important and enjoyable, even if, as just a movie it wasn't quite my cup of tea. Heck, you might be able to take my review of the Chaplin film and just swap out his name for Keaton's, and the review would basically be the same. Well, not really, but close. Instead of being a slapstick comedy based on history, this is a historical film that, while funny at times, isn't really a comedy, but still had some amusing moments and really made me appreciate the logn dead old school way of filmmaking on display here. Based on a true story, this is the tale of a train engineer named Johnnie Gray who, rejected by the Confederate Army, and dumped by his lady for seemingly being a coward, decides to win the Civil War himself on his own terms. When his beloved train The General is stolen by Yankees, he becomes a one man army determined to get it back, beat the enemy, and re-win the heart of his lady at all costs. Okay, so maybe I was a little harsh. This film is a comedy, and the above scenario I just described is humorous, but Keaton's style of humor is very deadpan, and it just didn;t always seem that funny to me. I like dry, deadpan stuff, but maybe the fact that this is silent is why some of it seemed lost on me. Actually it's not just a comedy, but a wild adventure/romance too. Keaton was basically the Jackie Chan of his day, doing all of his own stunts, and staging some really spectacular and amazing set pieces, ones that are still thrilling to this day, and not jsut because of the fact that they're all done practically. That helps though. Like Chaplin's stuff, the best bits from this have all been parodied and referenced many times over, and I once again spent a lot of time saying, 'Oh, so THAT's where this comes from!). See, I told you the reviews were interchangable. This is some good stuff, and it is enjoyable, but yeah, I didn't think it is quite one of the best ever. It's still damn impressive though, and you should definitely give it a watch, if only, once again, for default reasons.

Vengence drives a tough Detroit cop to stay on the trail of a power hungry auto magnate who. Dellaplane's mission is to gain a political power base and choose the next president of the United States. Because of what happened to Dellaplane's son Sean, Dellaplane has taken a particular dislike to Jackson. Jackson gets Sydney's help in going after Dellaplane. Contents • • • • • • • • Plot [ ] The story prologues with two auto-worker officials addressing the recent death of a peer. Within moments, both are brutally murdered by a group of shadowy, almost killers that seem to move, disappear and reappear at will during a daring skyscraper assault. Detective Sergeant Jericho Jackson, known locally as 'Action Jackson', was a celebrated lieutenant in the police force but demoted (nearly two years prior) because of a case he headed involving the criminal son of successful businessman Peter Anthony Dellaplane. The fall out over the case also collapsed Jackson's marriage and put the law-school-educated, star athlete and hometown hero at odds with the public. Even after his demotion, Jackson's continued interest leads to conflicts with his commander, Captain Armbruster, but he begins investigating Dellaplane's professional exploits, eventually uncovering a string of murdered trade-union members connected to Dellaplane's company. He discovers Dellaplane is secretly maneuvering his way into a 'behind-the-throne' seat of power and has been using a group of assassins, dubbed The Invisible Men, to kill uncooperative union officials. Jackson is assisted by Dellaplane's mistress, Sydney Ash, a local lounge singer and addict whom the businessman has assisted financially. He is eventually for murdering Dellaplane's wife Patrice (killed by her husband after she discovers his plot and goes to Jackson for help). On the run from the police, Jackson is helped by friends from his old neighborhood, kid Sable, a local hotel owner and retired professional boxer, and Dee, a lively, local hairdresser (and gossip informant) who gives Jackson a way to discreetly get to Dellaplane. Jackson and Sydney arrange a meeting with Dellaplane's figurehead replacement for the auto union, unaware that The Invisible Men had been tracking them and allowed the meeting so that Dellaplane could confront Jackson face to face. Before he leaves with Sydney in tow, Dellaplane arrogantly reveals the reasoning for his plans and intends to exact it using Jackson as a pawn. He intends to kill Jackson, put one of The Invisible Men in his place, have him kill an important union official, and then have Jackson's charred body discovered after he failed his getaway. 'Dellaplane, one of these days you are really going to piss me off,' Jackson calls after his nemesis as he leaves with all but three of The Invisible Men. 'We're going to have ourselves a little barbecue,' The Invisible Men's leader claims as they prepare to burn Jackson alive. But Jackson is suddenly rescued by Sydney's bodyguard 'Big' Edd and the pair kill all three Invisible Men. ('Barbecue, huh? How do you like your ribs?' Jackson asks the leader before he kills him with his own.) Jackson's escape leads to a fight at Dellaplane's mansion during the birthday party for the union leader Dellaplane plans to have assassinated. During the melee, the other members of The Invisible Men are killed by Jackson (who personally deals with the one set to make the kill and frame him), Edd, Jackson's old partner Detective Kotterwell, and a rehabilitated young thief named Albert. However, Dellaplane takes Sydney hostage and hides inside a bedroom in his mansion. After being given a gun by Kotterwell, Jackson commandeers a car being displayed at the party, crashes into the house, kills Dellaplane's butler/bodyguard by ramming him into a wall as the latter fires at him, and roars upstairs to crash into the room Dellaplane is holding Sydney in. After a brief standoff, Dellaplane, (a trained martial artist) challenges Jackson to hand-to-hand combat. At first Dellaplane has the upper hand, but after ramming Jackson into a car window, he is abruptly shoved back by Jackson, who turns and shouts 'Now you've pissed me off!' Jackson proceeds to thrash Dellaplane. In desperation, Dellaplane goes for his gun, only for Jackson to seize his own and engage in a crossfire exchange, with Jackson killing Dellaplane and receiving a wound in the shoulder in return. Captain Armbruster arrives with reinforcements, informs Jackson that he wants a full report on his desk 'in the morning'.and calls Jackson 'Lieutenant.' Sydney soon reveals she plans to go 'cold turkey' off of heroin, promising Jackson can have her 'on Thanksgiving.' Jackson replies, 'Can I have you any sooner?' Sydney giggles and the two kiss passionately as the screen fades to black. If you’re confused by the avalanche of early reports, denials, and conflicting statements about the massive security issues announced today, don’t worry — you’re far from the only one. Here’s what you need to know about Meltdown and Spectre, the two huge bugs that affect practically every computer and device out there. What are these flaws? Short answer: Bugs at a fundamental level that allow critical information stored deep inside computer systems to be exposed. — complete with nicknames and logos — of two major flaws found in nearly all modern central processing units, or CPUs. It’s not a physical problem with the CPUs themselves, or a plain software bug you might find in an application like Word or Chrome. It’s in between, at the level of the processors’ “architectures,” the way all the millions of transistors and logic units work together to carry out instructions. In modern architectures, there are inviolable spaces where data passes through in raw, unencrypted form, such as inside the kernel, the most central software unit in the architecture, or in system memory carefully set aside from other applications. This data has powerful protections to prevent it from being interfered with or even observed by other processes and applications. Meltdown and Spectre are two techniques researchers have discovered that circumvent those protections, exposing nearly any data the computer processes, such as passwords, proprietary information, or encrypted communications. Meltdown affects Intel processors, and works by breaking through the barrier that prevents applications from accessing arbitrary locations in kernel memory. Segregating and protecting memory spaces prevents applications from accidentally interfering with one another’s data, or malicious software from being able to see and modify it at will. Meltdown makes this fundamental process fundamentally unreliable. Spectre affects Intel, AMD, and ARM processors, broadening its reach to include mobile phones, embedded devices, and pretty much anything with a chip in it. Which, of course, is everything from thermostats to baby monitors now. It works differently from Meltdown; Spectre essentially tricks applications into accidentally disclosing information that would normally be inaccessible, safe inside their protected memory area. This is a trickier one to pull off, but because it’s based on an established practice in multiple chip architectures, it’s going to be even trickier to fix. Who is affected? Short answer: Pretty much everybody. Chips going back to 2011 were tested and found vulnerable, and theoretically it could affect processors as far back as those released in 1995. One would hope there aren’t too many of those in use, but we may be unpleasantly surprised on that count. Because Meltdown and Spectre are flaws at the architecture level, it doesn’t matter whether a computer or device is running Windows, OS X, Android, or something else — all software platforms are equally vulnerable. A huge variety of devices, from laptops to smartphones to servers, are therefore theoretically affected. Meltdown and Spectre Fixes Arrive—But Don't Solve Everything. SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) is a fictional organisation featured in the James Bond novels by Ian Fleming. ![]() The assumption going forward should be that any untested device should be considered vulnerable. Not only that, but Meltdown in particular could conceivably be applied to and across cloud platforms, where huge numbers of networked computers routinely share and transfer data among thousands or millions of users and instances. The good news is that the attack is easiest to perform by code being run by the machine itself — it’s not easy to pull this off remotely. So there’s that, at least. Can this be fixed? Short answer: Only partially, and it’s going to take a while. Many, many devices are “affected” or “vulnerable” to these flaws, but that’s not the same thing as saying they’re totally open to attack. Intel, AMD, ARM and others have had months to create workarounds and “mitigations,” which is a polite way of saying “band-aids.” Meltdown can be fixed essentially by building a stronger wall around the kernel; the technical term is “kernel page table isolation.” This solves the issue, but there’s a cost. Modern CPU architectures assume certain things about the way the kernel works and is accessed, and changing those things means that they won’t be able to operate at full capacity. The Meltdown fix may reduce the performance of Intel chips by as little as 5 percent or as much as 30 — but there will be some hit. Whatever it is, it’s better than the alternative. Spectre, on the other hand, is not likely to be fully fixed any time soon. The fact is that the practice that leads to this attack being possible is so hard-wired into processors that the researchers couldn’t find any way to totally avoid it. They list a few suggestions, but conclude: While the stop-gap countermeasures described in the previous section may help limit practical exploits in the short term, there is currently no way to know whether a particular code construction is, or is not, safe across today’s processors – much less future designs. What will actually happen is hard to say, but there will likely be a flurry of updates that carry out various software hacks to protect against the most obvious and damaging attacks. Microsoft has already issued one for Windows; ARM has a set of mitigations for its affected chips; Amazon is updating its many servers. How broadly and quickly will these mitigation patches be applied, though? How many devices are out there, vulnerable, right now? These updates may not be pretty, perhaps requiring changes that will break other software, drivers, and components. And all will likely involve degrading performance. A more permanent fix will require significant changes across the board — the circuit board, that is. Basic architecture choices that have been baked into our devices for years, even decades, will have to be rethought. It won’t be easy, and it won’t be fun. In the meantime companies are working at full capacity to minimize the apparent threat: “mitigations” that may or may not prevent some or all of the variant attacks. As usual, these patches will likely reach only a small subset of new, fast-updating users and devices, or those the company can update directly on its own. We will only know the efficacy of these measures by their performance in the real world. It’s worth noting that there won’t be a “recall.” If this flaw affected a single device, like the battery problems in Samsung’s phones a while back, a recall would make sense. But this is an issue that affects millions, perhaps billions of devices. A recall isn’t an option. Why are we only just hearing about this? Short answer: A planned joint disclosure was preempted by reporters. It’s always a bit odd to hear that companies were informed of a major security flaw like this one months ago, as was the case with Meltdown and Spectre. This particular exploit has been under investigation for some time by researchers, and word of it trickled out in the form of small updates to various operating systems addressing a hitherto-undocumented security flaw. If the researchers just tweeted out the details when they discovered them, it would essentially be giving attackers access to that information at the same time as the companies that can fix the problem. Generally security investigators do what’s called responsible disclosure, contacting affected companies secretly, either as a simple courtesy or in order to collaborate on a solution. In this case Google contacted Intel several months ago, and no doubt others knew to some degree as well, since Microsoft issued patches to insiders well ahead of the public announcement, and Linux distributions were likewise addressing the issue even though the papers describing the flaw were not out yet. The plan would normally be that the affected company or companies would come up with a solution, quietly apply it, then announce both the flaw and the solution at the same time. And in fact that seems to be what was planned in this case., which among others put together the disparate pieces, seems to have forced the hands of several billion-dollar companies. The companies scrambled to finalize their statements, addressing “inaccurate” media reports and hastily issuing patches and explanations that likely weren’t due until next week. While some may suggest that El Reg should have let things take their course, there’s a great deal to be said for not allowing the billion-dollar companies in question to completely control the narrative around a major issue like this. If the only version of the story we ever heard was one approved by their joint committee, things would likely have been painted in a different light. As the researchers put it at the end of the the Spectre paper: The vulnerabilities in this paper, as well as many others, arise from a longstanding focus in the technology industry on maximizing performance. As a result, processors, compilers, device drivers, operating systems, and numerous other critical components have evolved compounding layers of complex optimizations that introduce security risks. As the costs of insecurity rise, these design choices need to be revisited, and in many cases alternate implementations optimized for security will be required. James Martin/CNET Processors are vital to running all our computerized devices, even if we hardly ever think about them. That's why it's a big deal that they have major vulnerabilities, such as and, that leave them open to hacking attacks. As they run all the essential processes on your computer, these silicon chips handle extremely sensitive data. That includes passwords and encryption keys, the fundamental tools for keeping your computer secure. The Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities,, could let attackers capture information they shouldn't be able to access, like those passwords and keys. As a result, an attack on a computer chip can turn into a serious security concern. So how did this happen? And what will chip companies like and AMD (and the hardware makers that put the chips in their products) do to fix the problem? Here's what you need to know: What are the vulnerabilities? Researchers found two major weaknesses in processors that could let attackers read sensitive information that should never leave the CPU, or central processing unit. In both cases, attackers could see data that the processor temporarily makes available outside of the chip. More on Meltdown and Spectre • • • • One flaw, Spectre, would let attackers trick the processor into starting the speculative execution process. Then attackers could read the secret data the chip makes available as it tries to guess what function the computer will carry out next. The other flaw, Meltdown, lets attackers access the secret information through a computer's operating system, such as Microsoft Windows or Apple's High Sierra. Security experts refer to these sorts of incursions as side-channel attacks, because they access information as it's being used by a legitimate process on the computer. What are tech companies saying and doing about this? Intel CEO Brian Krzanich says the problems are well on their way to being fixed, at least in the case of Intel-powered PCs and servers. Intel said Thursday that by the end of next week and that for chips up to 10 years old, fixes will be released in the coming weeks. Microsoft on Wednesday released and its Internet Explorer and Edge browsers, but warned that your to support those patches. Apple said that it has for the Meltdown flaw for the operating systems on its Mac computers, Apple TVs, iPhones and iPads, and that neither Meltdown nor Spectre affects the Apple Watch. Apple also said Thursday that it will release patches 'in the coming days' for the Safari browser to help defend against Spectre exploits and that it will continue to release patches in future updates of its iOS, MacOS and TVOS software. Which chips are affected? A number of chip designs from Intel, Arm and AMD are susceptible to one or more variants of the attacks. The issue is so widespread because those chips, used in devices made by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others, all share a similar structure. What's more, the flaws don't just affect personal computers -- Meltdown also affects servers, the backbone of all major cloud services. So yes, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud are susceptible to the problem, too. It has secured all its affected products, and it would finish securing all affected products on Wednesday. How long has this been a problem? Researchers at, as well as a separate team of academic researchers, in 2017, but the issue has existed on chips for a long time -- perhaps more than 20 years. That's because the issue doesn't result from a badly written computer code. Instead, the problem comes down to the way the chips are intentionally designed. Processors are supposed to make the secret information easier to access as they gear up to run the next process on a computer. As the programming quip goes, this is a feature, not a bug. Has anyone been hacked via these flaws? Researchers, chipmakers and computer companies all say there are no known examples of hackers using these weaknesses to attack a computer. However, now that the details of the design flaws and how to exploit them are publicly available, the chances of hackers using them are much higher. The good news is that hackers would first need to install malicious software on your computer in order to take advantage of these flaws. That means they need to select their targets and hack each one of them before running a sophisticated attack to steal a computer's sensitive information. What can I do to protect myself? As chipmakers and computer companies roll out software updates, be sure to install them. Beyond that, since hackers would have to install malware on your computer, do your best to make that harder for them. That means you should keep all your other software updated, including your web browsers and Flash (if you're still using it). Also, run security software to make sure you don't have any malicious software on your computer right now. Finally, look out for phishing emails. Emails that trick you into clicking on a link and downloading malicious software are still the number one way for hackers to get a foothold on your computer. We buy pre-ground and whole beans. We make big carafes for the whole day or when we have company, and little French press pots when Nate and I have time together before the kids get up. Most days, though, it's coffee for one. Just me and the K-cup. Since going on the, I've most often been taking my coffee black. And to be totally honest, for a while there it kind of suckedbecause there's a bit of a learning curve for how to make black coffee. This is what my mornings without Nate look like. I get Sidekick settled in the jumper while I feed Some Boy breakfast and contemplate the ( literal) pile of stuff I have to deal with for the day. That mess there is my “to-do/put away” pile that accumulated while I was away. So that first cup of coffee in the mornings is a big deal. It's important that it taste good, strong, rich. It needs to jolt me out of my haze and help me feel good about tackling my day. On days like this, a less-than-stellar cup isn't even worth the energy it takes to make. My mom's been a long-time lover of coffee. I can still remember her sending me up to the counter for her usual when I was a kid. “Double-tall nonfat extra hot latte with extra foam, no whip.” We lived in the coffee-loving city of Seattle before coffee was uber chic, and I like to think I inherited some of my mom's refined cafe preferences. But the fact remains that at 20-something years old, I still hadn't figured out how to make black coffee that didn't taste like mud to me. So I snooped around her kitchen when we were up to visit last weekend to see how she does it. “What's this coffee brand on your counter, mom??” “Oh, yes,” she explained. “I've been drinking that coffee for years.” I picked her brain a little more to get the lowdown on brewing a good cup. Here are the biggest tips I picked up. Directed by Mark Harris. With Darrin Dewitt Henson, Christian Keyes, Lamman Rucker, Gabrielle Dennis. Weak coffee is more likely to be bitter. • Drink it fresh and don't overheat it. A good coffeemaker brews coffee at around 200 degrees for 45 seconds and doesn't let coffee sit on a warmed platform after brewing. I knew that Gevalia would be the perfect blend for me to learn how to make black coffee withIF I could find K-Cups. I'm loving the convenience of good coffee in a hurry, and it's nice not to have to clean the whole pot on days when it's just me. Has them in a medium blend ( my favorite) at an awesome price. I never fully understood how K-Cups worked until I got my own machine. Each little pod is basically a small packet of coffee grounds. The machine pokes a hole in the top and bottom of the packet that the water drips through, just like a mini version of a big coffee maker. The small serving size and ease of clean-up makes for the perfect cup with no hassle. How do you take your morning cup? Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love. ~ Charles Maurice de Talleyrand Its a rare sight to see someone drinking their coffee black these days especially with all the Starbucks on every corner people tend to lean towards cappa and frappa cino’s! Here are five reasons to drink your coffee black 1. Learn the taste of real coffee. When you have a milk based coffee it is hard to appreciate and recognize the notes of the actual coffee bean all that can be tasted is the slight bitterness of the coffee. Drinking coffee black allows you to pickup of the subtle differences from bean to bean and different roasts. You will be surprised how diverse the flavors can be from fruity and chocolate to oaky and floral. It is a nice thing to be able to appreciate coffee for what it really. You will find that once you enjoy drinking black coffee you will take pleasure in picking and choosing your own blends in supermarkets or specialist coffee shops. 2. Do it for your health; Black coffee is calorie and sugar free, it contains and we know that regular consumption of coffee decreases the risk of type II diabetes: Scientists tracked 41,934 men from 1986 to 1998 and 84,276 women from 1980 to 1998. These were free of diabetes, cancer, or cardiovascular disease at baseline. Coffee consumption was assessed every 2 to 4 years through validated questionnaires. What did they find? These investigators documented 1333 new cases of type 2 diabetes in men and 4085 new cases in women. The authors found an inverse association between coffee intake and type 2 diabetes after adjustment for age, body mass index, and other risk factors. In other words, those who drank the most coffee tended to have the least risk of diabetes. Even more intriguing, total caffeine intake from coffee and other sources was associated with a statistically significantly lower risk for diabetes in both men and women; meaning that decaffeinated coffee may not be as good for you as the caffeine-filled. The author’s concluded that the “data suggest that long-term coffee consumption is associated with a statistically significantly lower risk for type 2 diabetes.” What more could you ask for? When drinking your coffee black you get all this with no excess calories. 3. Mental and Physical Energy By drinking Americano’s, Espresso’s and other black coffee you will get the energizing effect and mental clarity far quicker as there is no milk/cream/soy in the coffee to slow its absorption and dull down the effects. This makes Black coffee before exercise work as a great performance enhancer as has been proven in several studies. Caffeine is the most versatile and effective ergogenic aid (i.e. Something that enhances exercise performance). A prominent exercise physiologist, David Costill, Ph.D., performed the ground-breaking study on caffeine and exercise 26 years ago! He took nine competitive cyclists (two females and seven males) and had them bike until exhaustion at 80% of V02 max. (Note: V02 max, also known as maximal oxygen uptake, is a measure of how well you cardiopulmonary system functions). Each subject consumed coffee containing 330 mg of caffeine 60 min before the exercise or a placebo (decaffeinated coffee). Following the ingestion of caffeine, the subjects were able to perform an average of 90 minutes of cycling as compared to an average of 76 minutes in the placebo trial. This reflects an 18% increase! They also found that subjects burned more fat (aka lipolysis) as shown by measurements of plasma free fatty acids, glycerol and respiratory exchange ratios. In fact, fat oxidation or burning was significantly higher (107% greater) during the caffeine trial (118 g or 1.31 g/min) than in the placebo trial (57 g or 0.75 g/min). Also, the perception of effort was much less in subjects after consuming subjects indicating that exercise felt easier. 4. Its Easy to Make All you need is some ground coffee and a french press or a stovetop percolator and you are good to go, leaving you flexible to brew up a great coffee before a workout or during your mid afternoon slump. Or if your feeling adventurous and want a strong coffee look into brewing. You will soon find that brewing your own coffee is a very relaxing and rewarding experience and look forward to brewing up a fresh coffee for breakfast or before a workout. It’s CHEAP Ever had a look at what the cheapest coffee at Starbucks is, you guessed it Black Coffee. This is the case at any coffee shop. As well as this brewing a good cup of straight coffee will be your cheapest option at home so you will save money in all walks of life. I can get a small bag of freshly ground beans at my local wholefoods for around $2-3 which will last me about 8 coffee’s in a french press thats about 3 coffee’s for $1 and that’s 3 of the best! So to stay in great shape learn to appreciate your coffee the way we are meant to, start drinking black coffee. ![]() The Best 3 Musketeers Dessert Recipes on Yummly| Three Musketeer Chocolate Cake, 3 Musketeers Ice Cream, Easy Homemade 3 Musketeers. What do you get when you mix one part action movie with one part holiday flick and add in a dash of sweaty tank top? Die Hard, John McTiernan’s genre-bending Christmas action masterpiece for the ages, which sees a badass NYPD cop take on a skyscraper full of bad guys in the midst of an office holiday party. Here are 30 things you might not know about the movie. IT’S GOT A LITERARY BACKGROUND. Think some action-loving Hollywood scribe came up with the concept for Die Hard? The movie is based on Roderick Thorp’s 1979 crime novel, which is a sequel to his 1966 novel, The Detective. In 2013, Thorp’s long out-of-print book was resurrected to coincide with the film’s 25th anniversary. IT WAS INSPIRED BY THE TOWERING INFERNO. The idea for Nothing Lasts Forever was inspired John Guillermin’s 1974 disaster flick The Towering Inferno. After seeing the film, Thorp had a dream about a man being chased through a skyscraper by a group of men with guns. He eventually turned that snippet of an idea into a sequel to The Detective. FRANK SINATRA GOT FIRST DIBS ON PLAYING THE ROLE OF JOHN MCCLANE. Getty Images Because he had starred in the big-screen adaptation of The Detective, Frank Sinatra had to be offered the role in its sequel. At the age of 73, he smartly turned it down. BRUCE WILLIS’S BIG-SCREEN DEBUT WAS WITH FRANK SINATRA. In 1980, Willis made his film debut (albeit uncredited) in the crime thriller The First Deadly Sin. He has no name and if you blink you’ll miss him, but the role simply required that Willis entered a diner as Sinatra’s character left it. Maybe it was kismet? CLINT EASTWOOD PLANNED TO TAKE A STAB AT THE PART. Originally, it was Clint Eastwood who owned the movie rights to Nothing Lasts Forever, which he had planned to star in in the early 1980s. That obviously never happened. IT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE A SEQUEL TO COMMANDO. This is one of the most popular internet stories about Die Hard. But according to Stephen de Souza, the of both Die Hard and Commando, while there was a sequel to Commando planned, the only similarity with Die Hard is that they both took place in buildings. According to de Souza, Escape Plan is the closest to his original Commando 2 idea and Die Hard was never supposed to be anything but Die Hard. BRUCE WILLIS WASN’T EVEN THE STUDIO’S THIRD CHOICE FOR THE ROLE. If Die Hard was to be a success, the studio knew they needed a bona fide action star in the part, so they set about offering it to a seemingly never-ending list of A-listers of the time. Rumor has it that Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Robert De Niro, Charles Bronson, Nick Nolte, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Don Johnson, Burt Reynolds, and Richard Dean Anderson (yes, MacGyver!) were all considered for the role of John McClane. And all declined it. BRUCE WILLIS WAS CONSIDERED A COMEDIC ACTOR AT THE TIME. Die Hard’s producers had nothing against Bruce Willis, of course. He just wasn’t an immediate choice for the role because, up until that point, he was known solely as a comedic actor, not an action star. Following the success of the film, the action genre really became Willis’s bread and butter, and although he has two Emmys for his comedy work, it has remained as such to this day. BRUCE WILLIS WAS BARELY EVEN SEEN ON THE MOVIE’S POSTERS. Twentieth Century Fox Because the studio’s marketing gurus were unconvinced that audiences would pay to see an action movie starring the funny guy from Moonlighting, the original batch of posters for the film centered on Nakatomi Plaza instead of Willis’s mug. As the film gained steam, the marketing materials were altered, and Willis was more prominent in the promos. WILLIS WAS PAID $5 MILLION TO MAKE THE MOVIE. Even with all the uncertainly surrounding whether he could pull the film off, Willis was paid $5 million to make Die Hard, which was considered a rather hefty sum at the time—a figure reserved for only the top tier of Hollywood talents. WILLIS SUGGESTED THAT BONNIE BEDELIA PLAY HIS WIFE. Though we suspect that she wasn’t paid $5 million for the gig. BRUCE WILLIS WAS ABLE TO SAY YES THANKS TO A WELL-TIMED PREGNANCY. The first few times Bruce Willis was asked to star in the movie, he had to say no because of his commitments to Moonlighting. Then costar Cybill Shepard announced that she was pregnant. Because her pregnancy wouldn’t work within the show, producer Glenn Caron gave everyone 11 weeks off, allowing Willis to say yes. SAM NEILL WAS ORIGINALLY APPROACHED FOR THE PART OF HANS GRUBER. But Neill ended up turning the film down. Then, in the spring of 1987, the casting director saw playing the dastardly Valmont in a stage production of Dangerous Liaisons and knew they had found their Hans. DIE HARD WAS ALAN RICKMAN’S FEATURE FILM DEBUT. Though Rickman may have played the part of Hans as cool as the other side of the pillow, it was actually his first role in a feature film. JOHN MCTIERNAN TURNED THE MOVIE DOWN, TOO. And not just once, but on a few different occasions. His reason was that the material just seemed too dark and cynical for him. “The original screenplay was a grim terrorist movie,” McTiernan Empire magazine in 2014. “On my second week working on it, I said, 'Guys, there's no part of terrorism that's fun. Robbers are fun bad guys. Let's make this a date movie.’ And they had the courage to do it.” 16. MCTIERNAN SEES IT AS A SHAKESPEAREAN TALE. In the original script, the action in Die Hard takes place over a three-day span, but McTiernan—inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream—insisted that it be condensed into a single evening. NAKATOMI PLAZA IS ACTUALLY FOX PLAZA. 'In this period, Japanese corporations were buying America,' production designer Jackson De Govia in the Die Hard DVD audio commentary. 'We posited that. Nakatami Corporation bought, disassembled it, and reassembled it in the atrium, like a trophy.' THAT PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE CITY BELOW? IT’S NOT REAL. A 380-foot-long background painting provided the illusion of a breathtaking city view in the movie. And it was a state-of-the-art one, too, with animated lights, moving traffic, and the ability to change from night to day. The painting is still the property of the studio and has been used in other productions since. THE FILM’S SUCCESS SPAWNED A BONA FIDE FRANCHISE. In addition to its four sequels, Die Hard has spawned video games and comic books, too. JOHN MCCLANE’S TUMBLE DOWN A VENTILATION SHAFT WAS AN ACCIDENT. Or maybe “error” would be a better word. But in the scene in which McClane jumps into an elevator shaft, his stunt man was supposed to grab onto the first vent. But he missed. Which made the footage even more exciting to watch, so editor Frank J. Urioste kept it in the final cut. ALAN RICKMAN’S DEATH SCENE WAS ALSO PRETTY SCARY. At least it was for Rickman. In order to make it look as if he was falling off a building, Rickman was supposed to drop 20 feet onto an air bag while holding onto a stunt man. But in order to get a genuinely terrified reaction out of him, they dropped him on the count of two—not three, as was planned. BRUCE WILLIS SUFFERED PERMANENT HEARING LOSS. Twentieth Century Fox In order to get the hyper-realism that director John McTiernan was looking for, the blanks used in the guns in the movie were modified to be extra loud. In one scene, Willis shoots a terrorist through a table, which put the action star in extremely close proximity to the gun—and caused permanent hearing loss. He referenced the injury in a with The Guardian. When they asked Willis his most unappealing habit, he replied that, “Due to an accident on the first Die Hard, I suffer two-thirds partial hearing loss in my left ear and have a tendency to say, ‘Whaaa?’” 24. ALAN RICKMAN WASN’T FOND OF THE NOISE EITHER. Whenever he had to shoot a gun in the film, Rickman couldn’t help but flinch. Which forced McTiernan to have to cut away from him so that his reactions were not caught on film. GRUBER’S AMERICAN ACCENT POSED NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. The scene in which Rickman, as Gruber, slips into an American accent and pretends to be yet another hostage who got away was insisted on by screenwriter Steven de Souza, who wanted them in a room together to duke it out. But McTiernan was never happy with Rickman’s American accent,, “I still hear Alan Rickman’s English accent. I was never quite happy with the way he opened his mouth [in that scene]. I shot it three times trying to get him to sound more stridently American. It’s odd for someone who has such enormous verbal skills; he just had terrible trouble getting an American accent.” 26. HANS GRUBER’S GERMAN IS MOSTLY GIBBERISH. And the bulk of his German cohorts were not German either. Bruce Willis, on the other hand, was actually born in West Germany to an American father and a German mother. BRUCE WILLIS HAS FOUR FEET. As Willis spends much of the movie in his bare feet running through broken glass, he was given a pair of rubber feet to wear as a safety precaution. Which is great and all, but if you look closely in certain scenes, you can actually see the fake appendages. YOU CAN SEE—BUT NOT TOUCH—JOHN MCCLANE’S SWEATY TANK TOP. Getty Images In 2007, Willis the blood-soaked tank top he wore in Die Hard to the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian. “YIPPEE-KI-YAY” STOLE THE MOVIE. It was a simple line: “Yippee-ki-yay, motherf*cker!” But it became the film’s defining moment, and the unofficial catchphrase that has been used in all four Die Hard sequels as well. CREDIT FOR THE LINE IS OWED TO WILLIS. In a 2013 with Ryan Seacrest, Bruce Willis admitted that “Yippee-ki-yay, motherf*cker!” was really just a joke. “It was a throwaway,” said Willis. “I was just trying to crack up the crew and I never thought it was going to be allowed to stay in the film.' Since making its premiere on November 4, 2016, The Crown—which the 2017 Golden Globe for Best Drama—has become an indisputable hit for Netflix. The series, created by two-time Oscar nominee Peter Morgan, follows the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the ups and downs of the royal family. Now that season two has dropped—and you’ve most likely already binge-watched all of it—we’re already looking ahead to season three, which will likely return in late 2018. Here’s everything we know about The Crown’s third season so far. OLIVIA COLMAN WILL PLAY THE QUEEN. From the very beginning, creator Peter Morgan made it clear that each season of The Crown would cover roughly a decade of history, and that the cast would change for season three and again in season five (to more accurately represent the characters 20 and 40 years later). In October, it was announced that Broadchurch star —who won a Globe Globe Award last year for her role in The Night Manager—would take over the role of Queen Elizabeth II. When discussing her replacement with Jimmy Fallon, current Queen Claire Foy praised her successor, 'You'll forget all about me and the rest of the cast. You'll be like, ‘Who are they?' We're the warm-up act.' COLMAN HAS SOME EXPERIENCE PLAYING A ROYAL. Nicola Dove/Focus Features Though she might be best known for her role in Broadchurch, Olivia Colman is no stranger to playing a member of the royal family. In 2012, she played Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon—wife of King George VI and the mother of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret—in. Later this year, she’ll play Queen Anne in Yorgos Lanthimos’s, with Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. HELENA BONHAM CARTER IS 'ALL BUT CONFIRMED' TO PLAY PRINCESS MARGARET. Though there's been no official announcement, the Evening Standard that Helena Bonham Carter is 'all but confirmed' to play Princess Margaret in The Crown's next season. Like Olivia Colman, Carter also has some experience playing a royal: She also played Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, often referred to as the Queen Mother, in the Oscar-winning The King's Speech. MATT SMITH’S REPLACEMENT HAS YET TO BE ANNOUNCED, BUT THE ACTOR HAS AN INKLING. While Matt Smith’s replacement as Prince Philip has yet to be announced, passing an iconic role on to another actor is something the former star has some experience with. 'It was hard to give up the Doctor—you want to play it for ever. But with this, you know you can’t,' Smith The Times. While he’s not naming names, Smith did tease that he may know who will play Philip next during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “I don’t want to speculate too much, but he’s brilliant, if it’s the person I think it might be,” Smith said. “And he’s incredibly handsome as well. I’ve morphed into someone far better-looking than I.” 5. PRINCESS DIANA WILL MAKE HER FIRST APPEARANCE IN SEASON 3. As The Crown moves forward, time will, too. And the next season will feature two key figures of the 1980s. 'Peter is writing [Margaret] Thatcher and [Princess] Diana for season four,” Smith The Times, adding that, “I’m looking forward to seeing where they take it, to be honest.' Though fans worried that, based on the current time jumps between seasons, it would take another few years to see Princess Diana be introduced, Morgan to People Magazine that Princess Diana will make her first appearance toward the end of season three and that she will be heavily featured in the two seasons that follow. CAMILLA PARKER BOWLES WILL ALSO BE FEATURED. Express Newspapers/Archive Photos/Getty Images As it’s difficult to cover the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana without including Camilla Parker Bowles as part of the story, the current Duchess of Cornwall will also make her first appearance in season three. “Peter [Morgan]’s already talking about the most wonderful things,” The Crown producer Suzanne Mackie revealed during the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival in April 2017. “You start meeting Camilla Parker Bowles in season three,” she said, noting that they were then in the process of mapping out seasons three and four. PRINCESS MARGARET’S MARRIAGE TO LORD SNOWDON WILL STILL BE A PART OF THE STORY. Princess Margaret’s roller-coaster relationship with Antony Armstrong-Jones played a major part of The Crown’s second season, and the dissolution of their marriage will play out in season three. “We’re now writing season three,' Robert Lacey, the series’ history consultant and the author of The Crown: The Official Companion, Volume 1, Town & Country in December. “And in season three, without giving anything away—it’s on the record, it’s history—we’ll see the breakup of this extraordinary marriage between Margaret and Snowdon. This season, you see how it starts, and what a strange character, a brilliant character Snowdon was.” 8. VANESSA KIRBY IS JEALOUS OF WHOEVER TAKES OVER THE ROLE OF PRINCESS MARGARET. Alex Bailey/Netflix While Vanessa Kirby, who has played Princess Margaret in the first two seasons, knows that the cast will undergo a shakeup, she’s not afraid to admit that she’s jealous of all the juicy drama the next Margaret will get to experience (whether it's Helena Bonham Carter or not). “I was so desperate to do further on,” Kirby Vanity Fair, “because it’s going to be so fun [to enact] when their marriage starts to break down. You see the beginnings of that in episode 10. I kept saying to [Peter Morgan], ‘Can’t you put in an episode where Margaret and Tony have a big row, and she throws a plate at his head?’ I’m so envious of the actress who gets to do it.” Kirby even went so far as to suggest that Margaret’s life could be turned into its own series, telling Morgan, “‘We need to do a spin-off.’ You actually could do 10 hours on Margaret because she’s so fascinating. There’s so much to her, and she’s such an interesting character. I know that parts like this hardly ever come along.” 9. IT SHOULD JUMP AHEAD IN TIME A BIT. Considering that both Camilla Parker Bowles—who Prince Charles dated from 1971 to 1973—and Princess Diana will be featured, along with the breakup of Princess Margaret’s marriage (which ended in 1978, though they separated in 1976), it’s safe to say that at least part of season three will take place in the mid- to late 1970s. Which will be slightly ahead of the previous decade-long plan for each season. Pixar's stellar animated films don't start out 100 percent brilliant. The has a meticulous for each of its films, with editors and directors crafting and over and over again, and making plenty of missteps during what is typically a three-year process of storyboarding and animating. We don’t usually get to see the ideas that got left on the cutting-room floor in the process of making like, but the recently gave fans an inside look of some of those plans in a video released on the Disney Pixar. The video, spotted by a fan site called the, details significant twists in the development process of 11 of Pixar’s most famous films, from to to. Some of the changes were major, involving entire plots and characters., for instance, initially revolved around two brothers who lived in a floating city. At first, the movie that would become followed an electric car dealing with being an outsider in a small town full of more traditional vehicles. Inside Out’s Riley started out with 27 different emotions, each with their own names and individual characters. Entire characters were removed from some films, like Ratatouille’s mother, Desiree. Other were slightly more minor, like design changes to characters like Mike in Monsters Inc. (who almost ended up a fuzzball) or Edna Mode in, who was initially far taller than the teeny-tiny suit designer that appears in the released movie. While it’s fun to imagine how some of these tweaks would have played out if they made it into the final film, others clearly belonged on the cutting-room floor. Can you imagine if Toy Story had been called Toys in the Hood? Yeah, neither can we. See more of the scrapped ideas in the video below. Is a fascinating illustration of the power of film and why movies can be magical, making a statement about why the art form is important. Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made is a documentary that chronicles the production of the well known fan-film Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation. After seeing Steven Spielberg’s seminal action/adventure blockbuster and falling in love with Indiana Jones, childhood friends Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala organized a team and set forth to film a shot-for-shot remake of the movie. Beginning in 1982, the project consumed seven years of their lives as they painstakingly recreated the sophisticated sequences to the best of their ability. The group wrapped in 1989, completing every single scene except one: the famous plane battle on the landing pad. Years later as adults, Strompolos and Zala put together a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding so they could go back and finish what they started as pre-teens. In 2014, they attempted to pull the plane sequence off, looking to overcome the various obstacles life (and nature) threw their way out of a labor of love. Like most documentaries, Raiders! Is tailor made for a very specific audience: cinephiles and fans. That said, Raiders! Is a fascinating illustration of the power of film and why movies can be magical, making a statement about why the art form is important. Directors Jeremy Coon and Tim Skousen use Strompolos and Zala’s nearly 35 year odyssey to show how films can bring people together – even when things fall apart in truly devastating ways – and why it’s always worthwhile to fulfill dreams. Focusing primarily on Strompolos and Zala (fellow cohort Jayson Lamb is also predominantly featured), the documentary’s greatest strength is providing the viewer with insight into the filmmakers. Detailing troubled youths underscored by divorces (several of the kids’ parents separated in the 1980s), it becomes apparent why the team was so dedicated and committed to working on their Raiders remake. They used film as a means of escapism and refuge, throwing themselves in a fun fantasy where the only concern was how to nail a stunt just right. There were plenty of sacrifices made along the way (see: a brief segment on birthday and Christmas gifts), but Raiders! Does a fantastic job of highlighting the sense of camaraderie as the group of outcasts banded together to make their dream a reality. The documentary has a nice emotional hook that carries the audience through to a conclusion that proves to be rewarding. The interview bits are interspersed with a behind-the-scenes look at how the plane fight came together. It’s here where Strompolos and Zala’s undying passion for the project is most prevalent, as they choose to go all out to make the final scene look as great as possible (with a full scale plane blowing up). There’s a palpable “will they or won’t they?” sense of tension as the shoot turns into a torturous affair marred by inclement weather and mounting personal pressures. The uninitiated may not understand why someone like Zala would be so willing to literally risk his job for the sake of finishing a fan film, but those along for the ride will thoroughly enjoy these sections and root for the team to get the job done. Aspiring filmmakers will recognize Strompolos and Zala as kindred spirits passionate about their vision who won’t rest until they’ve achieved what they set out to do. There’s something inspiring about these portions, showcasing everyday people making one final push to accomplish their wildest goals. Actually has an intriguing arc that arguably follows the classic three act structure of a narrative film. There’s an interesting juxtaposition when Coon and Skousen move to when the Raiders remake achieved cult status on the bootleg video market. As the fan film reached new heights of popularity (in large part because of a screening at Harry Knowles’ “Butt-numb-a-thon”), the friendships of the people behind it had splintered due to a variety of circumstances. After years separated, Strompolos, Zala, and Lamb are reunited at a premiere event at the Alamo Drafthouse, spearheaded by Knowles and director Eli Roth. The surrealism of watching a home movie turn into a phenomenon that made its way to Spielberg is perhaps the best highlight of the documentary’s underlying themes and message. Because of this project, old friends were able to reconnect and bury the past as they reflected on an incredible journey. As stated earlier, Raiders! Is designed with a certain audience in mind, making it difficult to recommend the documentary for viewers who aren’t film buffs. Those who have no attachment to the Indiana Jones franchise or filmmaking in general may find it hard to see the appeal. While the underlying point of the documentary (people should pursue their dreams) is universal, the execution of the documentary probably pushes it into a niche corner where it won’t resonate with everyone. That said, it’s a minor quibble that ultimately doesn’t undercut Raiders! Evan a casual fan of the “official” Raiders of the Lost Ark should get a kick out of seeing ambitious kids act out many famous moments and discovering how the whole idea came together back in 1982. In the end, Raiders! Is a strong documentary covering the blood, sweat, and tears that were put into making a touchstone of fan culture. Coon and Skousen deserve a lot of credit for allowing the audience to learn who Strompolos and Zala are as people, making them as relatable and sympathetic as protagonists in a Hollywood film. It’s a must-see for someone with even a passing interest in the Indiana Jones series or hopes of making their own films one day. Spielberg has made a career out of touching viewers with genuine movie magic, so it’s only fitting that a documentary about a group of self-described Goonies remaking one of his most famous efforts can leave the same impact. ![]() The true, decades-spanning tale of the greatest fan film ever made.
